“I’ve always believed dance can transform lives,” says Vicki Stavrinos, dancer, teacher, and choreographer with over 20 years’ experience. As Creative Director of Bam Bam Boogies, Vicki has been preserving Street Dance and Hip-Hop culture since 2004. Her work spans global performances, mentoring dancers, and co-directing Project:ME (Mind Empower), a programme designed to promote physical and mental wellbeing for young people.

She is also an ISTD teacher, syllabus contributor, CPD tutor, and Street Dance competition adjudicator, helping shape the future of Street Dance education.

“Dance can transform lives socially, mentally, and physically.”

What inspired Bam Bam Boogies and Project:ME?

Bam Bam Boogies was founded from a deep love of Street Dance, particularly Popping and Locking, after I returned from training with the legendary Electric Boogaloos in the USA. At the time, there were no opportunities in my community to explore these styles, so I brought them to Essex. Within two years, we had over 200 students. Project:ME grew from the same passion for community impact. Over tea with a close friend – a talented Life Coach – we shared ideas about supporting young people better. That conversation became the seed of Project:ME.”

Street Dance: a tool for mental health

“Street Dance is a powerful way to engage people of all ages. It introduces participants to a new culture and offers freedom of movement and self-expression. While rooted in technique and history, its magic lies in how it resonates with those who connect with the music, the movement, and its vibrant community.”

“Street Dance offers freedom of movement and a unique outlet for self-expression.”

How does Project:ME support young people?

“Since 2018, we’ve partnered with schools, colleges, and community groups, supported by Sport England and Active Essex. Our programmes focus on physical and personal development. We’ve seen Year 6 pupils transition into Year 7 with greater confidence and resilience."

What’s next for Project:ME?

“We’re working to make our programmes more accessible and expand nationwide. Online resources are set to launch in 2026. In the meantime, our team continues delivering our 12-week My Amazing Mind & Body programme and weekly drop-in workshops, Mission: POSSIBLE, in Chelmsford. We also run Belong, helping women rebuild confidence and rediscover purpose.”

“In January 2026, Bam Bam Boogies is launching the Intro into Street Dance project, designed for 17–25-year-olds transitioning out of education or seeking confidence in key areas of life. This initiative fuses physical and mental training and is supported by the Active Essex Foundation.”

“Our vision is to expand nationwide and make resources accessible to all.”
